To maintain an environment that contributes to the reduction in potential contaminants, the appropriate perioperative attire should be worn. This not only protects the patient from any potential wound infections it also provides protection for operating theatre personnel against hazardous body fluids/substances. The Australian College of Operating Room Nurses (ACORN) standard named 'Perioperative Attire' 2010 reiterates this.
Principles regarding operating theatre attire include:
1. Change all outer garments when entering the operating suite.
2. Change perioperative attire daily or when soiled.
3. Wear long sleeved warm up jackets when working as non- scrubbed personnel.
4. Ensure all hair is covered with a hat.
5. Wear shoes that have non-slip soles that are easy to clean and used only for theatre.
6. Masks should be chosen according to the nature of the surgical procedure.
7. Remove the mask completely when no longer required.
8. Fingernails should be kept clean, short and free from artificial nails and nail polish.
9. Jewelery should be kept to a minimum.
Personal protective equipment (PPE) shall be worn in accordance to Workplace Health and Safety (WPHS) and infection control requirements and the specific needs for each case.
