Sharps Management

The greatest risk to health care personnel is the exposure to contaminated sharps that may contain blood-borne viruses. They should be handled with considerable care.

  • Sharps should be contained in a labelled puncture resistant container that conforms to Australian standards.

  • Containers should be located in a position away from patients, visitors, children, and nonauthorised people.

  • Containers need to be safely secured to avoid tipping either being wall mount or in a protected area.

  • Have the containers in a central position to ease disposal at the point of use.

  • Fill the containers only to % level or as marked by the manufacturer. The lid secured tightly closed for disposal.
